Overall yearbook is judged based on the use of written and graphic elements carried throughout the entirety of the yearbook.

Heart Christian Preparatory Academy 2014 Yearbook

A Bible verse John 20:30-31 that talks about life by the power of Jesus’ name, inspired silhouette shapes of children doing activities in life and school. This was also represented by the use of geometric shapes scattered like confetti and geometric patterns throughout the yearbook.

The popularity of comic books combined with the style of pop artists such as Roy Litchenstein.

Our mascot is the Cougar, so the theme was a subtle cougar connection throughout with the paws graphic, or play on words in the divider pages

Express Yourself was our theme, and the use of old chalkboards with modern designs and doodles was incorporated to give it the look of different ways to express yourself.

The cover was inspired by the theme for the school year which is up, up and away basically for the children it was a theme throughout the year to let their imagination soar up and away to whatever they could dream of!

Monterey Hills Elementary/SPUSD 2014 Yearbook

I wanted to design something clean and linear, but colorful and playful, fitting the color-block theme chosen by our editor, and simple enough to be enjoyed by 10-11-year-olds. I found inspiration in a timeline template used by one of my freelance clients. I thought of the circular photos after researching some design sites I like — I thought they would provide a nice contrast to the straight lines in the structure of the dates, and give me an opportunity to use more colors from the yearbook theme.

The children were enjoying an evening of fun and just as it was getting dark I snapped this of a student on the monkey bars! I love the silhouette!

This day, as on most, when a student saw me on campus they asked to have their photo taken for the yearbook. This student said he would jump off the swing for me.

We wanted to place our mascot into our yearbook as much as possible this year! We went through great strides to place our Lion into as many pictures as we could. So many kids played a role in this year’s book, and we are so proud of the product.

With our theme being, The Game of Hillel, we created these beautiful game cards to highlight our graduation 8th grade class. One card features The Game of Hillel logo, and the other card features a remade logo of our school in graphic form.

2nd Place:

Codrington School, barbados 2014 Yearbook

Predominantly a class of girls, MYP4 have a fondness for fashion, Tumblr and Instagram photo filters. These interests fit well with a ‘Vintage France’ theme and so the page reflects that. A sepia tone was applied across the page and the student photos were placed in a vintage fashion on ‘aged, grunge-style’ postcards, featuring the Eiffel Tower on a stamp. The informal photo used on the left hand side was a favourite among the students and they requested it be used.

It was LifeTouch photo day at school and we wanted to capture the fun that the kids had prepping for their photo.

The inspiration for this picture came from a love for “all things old” by our staff photographer. The antique truck represents “old and stable traditions” in a very young and new world.

Our school celebrated it’s 30th anniversary this year, was awarded the National Blue Ribbon Award by the U.S. Department of Education and had our school logo and mascot redesigned. I wanted to create a yearbook that highlighted these events but still include lots of fun elements that the students enjoy so much…mainly photos of themselves!
